Derek Deon Henry Jr., a 30-year-old resident of Bakersfield, California, tragically lost his life on September 29, 2021. The incident occurred in the north alley of the 3900 block of Sorrano Avenue, where Henry was fatally shot while seated in his Chevy Tahoe. The confrontation that led to his death was rooted in a complex relationship dynamic involving Henry, his ex-girlfriend, and her then-current boyfriend, Ethan Jermaine Smith.
Smith, who was 20 years old at the time, admitted to
shooting Henry. According to court filings, Smith claimed he acted in self-defense, stating that Henry had previously threatened to kill him. The altercation escalated when Smith confronted Henry, who was described as becoming "extremely disrespectful." In response, Smith fired through the windshield of Henry's vehicle, resulting in Henry's immediate death at the scene. Smith was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and held on $1.25 million bail.
The investigation revealed that Smith had a history of being upset over the friendship his girlfriend maintained with Henry. Smith's girlfriend informed the police that Smith often made threats about assaulting Henry and was particularly agitated by their interactions.
