In the quiet solitude of the Point Retreat Lighthouse, some eight miles west of Juneau, Alaska, a life came to a sudden and tragic end. Joseph Alaniz, a 42-year-old man from Big Lake, was the sole operator and groundskeeper of this remote outpost on the northern tip of Admiralty Island. On Saturday, January 3, 2026, his tenure as the lighthouse's lone caretaker concluded in an unforeseen tragedy.
