In the quiet solitude of the Point Retreat Lighthouse, some eight miles west of Juneau, Alaska, a life came to a sudden and tragic end. Joseph Alaniz, a 42-year-old man from Big Lake, was the sole operator and groundskeeper of this remote outpost on the northern tip of Admiralty Island.
