A tragic story unfolded on the southbound lanes of U.S. 71 Highway near Blue River Road on the morning of January 7, 2026. Keithlin Royster, a 32-year-old Black man, was fatally shot in what Kansas City police believe was a road rage incident. The event led to the closure of the highway for several hours as investigators processed the scene.
Just before 11:20 a.m., officers were called to the scene where they discovered a vehicle stopped on the side of the road.
Inside, they found Royster unresponsive with a gunshot wound. A woman was also present at the scene and was asking for help. Paramedics arrived and pronounced Royster dead at the scene.
Investigators believe that the shooting stemmed from an altercation between Royster and two unidentified men in another vehicle. The exact location where the dispute began and where the shooting occurred is still under investigation.
In a significant development, a person of interest turned himself in to the police on the afternoon of the shooting. Detectives questioned the individual and have stated that they are not currently seeking any other suspects. The case has been presented to prosecutors for their consideration of any potential charges.
