In the quiet community of Florence, South Carolina, the life of 16-year-old Jonathan Henry Gordon-Charles was tragically cut short on January 8, 2026. A Black male known affectionately to his loved ones as Lil JonHenry, Johnny Boy, or simply Jon, he was a student at South Florence High School with a passion for music that was evident to all who knew him.
The night of January 8th took a fatal turn on Waxwing Drive, where Jonathan was involved in a shooting.
Law enforcement and SLED investigators responded to the incident, which they quickly determined to be a homicide. Their investigation revealed that the shooting stemmed from an argument that erupted during a transaction for a THC vape pen. This altercation ultimately led to the gunfire that ended Jonathan's life.
In the days following the shooting, the Florence Police Department made an arrest in connection with the case. A 14-year-old male was taken into custody and charged with the murder of Jonathan Gordon-Charles. Following his arrest, the teen was held at the Department of Juvenile Justice to await a court hearing. A judge subsequently denied bond for the 14-year-old suspect.
The death of Jonathan Henry Gordon-Charles resonated deeply within the Florence community, prompting city leaders to take action. In the wake of this and other incidents involving young people, the Florence City Council passed the final reading of a new teen curfew ordinance. This measure was enacted to enhance the safety of juveniles in the city.
