On the evening of Saturday, December 6, 2025, a family gathering in Dallas, Texas, intended to celebrate a new life turned into a scene of sudden violence. Family and friends had traveled from as far as Houston to attend a baby shower at the Verbazend Creations & Event Venue located in the 2900 block of West Wheatland Road in the Red Bird area. Among the guests was Joseph Anthony Premeaux, a 33-year-old male plumber and father of three, who had made the trip with his wife and children to
support his niece. The event, described by attendees as joyful and filled with children, neared its conclusion around 9:55 p.m. when the atmosphere shifted drastically due to an interpersonal dispute.
According to investigators and witness accounts, an argument initially broke out between two women at the party. The verbal confrontation quickly escalated, drawing in male guests who attempted to intervene. Witnesses stated that a man, later identified as a guest named Jesus Angel Torres, was involved in the physical altercation and was subsequently pushed out of the venue's front door by others attempting to defuse the situation. However, the conflict did not end there; Torres allegedly produced a firearm from his pocket and opened fire back into the building. During the chaos, Premeaux reportedly stepped in to shield his wife from the gunfire and was struck in the chest.
Emergency responders arrived to find a chaotic scene with multiple gunshot victims. Premeaux was rushed to Methodist Dallas Medical Center, but despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. Four other individuals were also wounded in the exchange, including Premeaux's cousin, Hector Valdez, who was shot in the head and left in critical condition. Two other guests sustained non-life-threatening injuries, with one man shot in the hand and a woman struck in the ankle. The shooter reportedly fled the scene in a white Nissan Altima immediately following the barrage of gunfire.
The investigation led police to a hospital in Mansfield, where 21-year-old Jesus Angel Torres had sought treatment for a gunshot wound to his leg, which he sustained during the incident, possibly from return fire. Law enforcement noted that Torres arrived in a vehicle matching the description of the one seen leaving the crime scene. He was taken into custody on Monday, December 8, and booked into the Dallas County Jail. Torres faces a charge of murder, with his bond initially withheld, as detectives continued to piece together the tragic sequence of events that claimed Premeaux’s life and left a family mourning a devoted protector.
