On the day of Zepeda's death, he arranged to meet with Joy Gray, who was supposed to provide sexual services in exchange
for money. However, the situation took a deadly turn when Kilpatrick and Simmons blocked Zepeda's car and attempted to steal his wallet. When Zepeda tried to drive away, Kilpatrick shot him, fatally striking him in the head.
The suspects were arrested and faced multiple charges, including capital murder. Kilpatrick, a convicted felon, was believed to be the shooter in all four killings, including Zepeda's. The investigation revealed that the crime spree began with the murder of another woman who was shot multiple times after refusing to participate in the suspects' scheme.
