On the morning of December 20, 2025, a violent sequence of events began in the Lake Highlands area of Dallas, ultimately claiming the life of Nadia Swanson, a 30-year-old female. Officers from the Dallas Police Department were dispatched at approximately 10:15 a.m. to a residence in the 9000 block of Markville Drive following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, first responders discovered Swanson suffering from a gunshot wound.
She was immediately transported by Dallas Fire-Rescue to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, but despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at 11:11 a.m. The shooter had already fled the scene before law enforcement arrived, initiating an urgent manhunt across the city.
Detectives quickly identified the suspect as 32-year-old Gerald Frank Martin. While the motive for the shooting was not immediately clear, investigators learned that the two were acquainted, with family members later stating that the incident may have stemmed from an argument. By late morning, police units were conducting surveillance and successfully tracked Martin to the neighboring city of Mesquite. He was located driving a vehicle near the 18500 block of the North LBJ Freeway, not far from the bustling Town East Mall, which was crowded with holiday shoppers.
Around 11:45 a.m., officers from both the Dallas and Mesquite Police Departments coordinated a felony traffic stop on the service road of Interstate 635. The situation escalated rapidly when Martin brought the vehicle to a halt. According to police reports, he exited the car armed with a weapon, leading to an armed confrontation with the officers on the scene. In the ensuing exchange, police opened fire, striking Martin. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers or bystanders were physically harmed during the standoff.
The aftermath of the violence left a family in deep mourning, as Swanson was a mother to five children. Her mother, Shashawn Swanson, expressed publicly that she was left with unanswered questions regarding the senseless loss of her daughter. Because the suspect was deceased, no arrests were made in connection with the homicide. The Dallas Police Department continued to lead the investigation into Swanson's murder, while the Mesquite Police Department and the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office launched separate inquiries into the officer-involved shooting that ended the suspect's life.
