On the morning of December 24, 2025, a violent domestic disturbance unfolded at a residence in the 100 block of Mallow Grove in West Bexar County, San Antonio, Texas. Bexar County Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene shortly after 6:30 a.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered 42-year-old Evaristo Reyes Gomez Jr. suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.
Despite the immediate life-saving efforts attempted by law enforcement officers, the man was unresponsive and was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office later ruled his death a homicide.
The investigation quickly focused on the individuals present at the home, specifically 36-year-old Courtney Renee Hooper, who was identified as the victim's girlfriend. Authorities determined that the couple had been involved in a heated argument earlier that morning, which reportedly stemmed from a dispute over a cellphone and a vehicle. This altercation escalated until Hooper allegedly produced a firearm and shot Gomez in the torso. At the time of the incident, children were present inside the residence, though they were physically unharmed and were later placed in the care of Child Protective Services.
During the initial inquiry, Hooper reportedly provided deputies with security camera footage that she claimed would exonerate her by showing that she had been assaulted prior to the shooting. However, Sheriff Javier Salazar stated that the video evidence had the opposite effect, capturing parts of the disturbance that substantiated her culpability rather than supporting a claim of self-defense. Deputies noted an extensive history of calls to the residence regarding dating-related disturbances involving Hooper. Following the investigation, she was taken into custody and charged with murder.
