In the early morning hours of November 1, 2025, the vibrant energy of Halloween celebrations in downtown New Haven was shattered by gunfire, leaving 18-year-old Alexa Acevedo of Norwich fatally wounded. A hardworking college student with a passion for early childhood education, she was among a crowd of thousands enjoying the festive atmosphere when the shooting erupted.
Acevedo was a recent graduate of Norwich Free Academy and was attending CT State Community College Three Rivers, following in her mother's footsteps with aspirations in education and a love for family and music.
The incident occurred around 2:34 a.m. near the intersection of Church and Center streets, an area bustling with people drawn to the city's 18-plus venues and bars. Police, who were present in large numbers to monitor the large crowds, responded to reports of gunfire and discovered a chaotic scene. Acevedo and two other individuals, another 18-year-old female and a 21-year-old man, were found suffering from gunshot wounds. Shortly after, a second 21-year-old man arrived at Yale New Haven Hospital with injuries from the same shooting. Acevedo was pronounced dead at the scene, her death marking the fifteenth homicide in New Haven that year.
Investigators believe the four victims were not the intended targets of the violence. Camera footage from the area captured what police described as an exchange of gunfire between at least two individuals. The shooting was part of a violent night that overwhelmed the approximately 40 officers stationed downtown, who were reportedly pulled in many directions by numerous fights and other disturbances. The large crowd, estimated between 7,000 and 10,000 people, created a challenging environment for law enforcement.
As of early November, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting that killed Alexa Acevedo and injured three others. The New Haven Police Department is actively investigating the case and reviewing surveillance footage to identify the shooters involved. In the wake of the tragedy, city officials acknowledged the challenges of managing large, out-of-town crowds and pledged to increase police presence downtown to prevent future violence.
