In the early morning hours of Sunday, April 23, 2023, a tragedy unfolded on Saltonstall Avenue in New Haven, Connecticut, claiming the life of 26-year-old Hispanic female, Tayna Natalie Rodriguez. She was a lifelong resident of New Haven and a certified nurse's aid. The incident began as a dispute between three men, an altercation in which Rodriguez was not initially involved.
Witnessing the escalating conflict, Rodriguez reportedly got out of her vehicle and approached the group in an
attempt to de-escalate the situation and act as a peacemaker. It was during this brave act that she was tragically struck by gunfire. Emergency services were called to the scene around 1:11 a.m., where they found Rodriguez with a gunshot wound. She was rushed to Yale-New Haven Hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly after her arrival.
The immediate aftermath saw a swift police response. Officers arriving at the scene located a man, identified as Leon Guerrero, who matched the description of the shooter. Guerrero surrendered to the officers, informing them that he had placed his firearm in his vehicle. He was taken into custody, and an investigation into the shooting was launched by the New Haven Police Department's Major Crimes Unit. Guerrero, 34, was subsequently arrested and charged with murder.
The legal process concluded in June 2024, when a Supreme Court jury found Leon Guerrero guilty of the murder of Tayna Rodriguez. On November 4, 2024, he was sentenced to 40 years in prison for his role in her death. During the sentencing, the court acknowledged the immense loss suffered by Rodriguez's family, noting that her parents lost a daughter and her own child lost a mother. The judge described Rodriguez as having been "attempting to be a peacemaker" when she was senselessly killed.
