On the evening of May 15, 2021, Mariyah Miylena Nakhoune Inthirath, a 20-year-old female from Bridgeport, Connecticut, was fatally shot in the Newhallville neighborhood of New Haven. At approximately 7:39 p.m., police responded to reports of gunfire on Sheffield Avenue. Shortly after, a private vehicle brought Inthirath to the Chapel Street campus of Yale New Haven Hospital. She had sustained a single gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Her death was the tenth homicide in New Haven that year.
Described by her family as energetic, outgoing, and someone who loved to live life, Mariyah had dreams of becoming a model. She was the only daughter and sister to three brothers and was considered a "best friend" by her mother. Friends and family remembered her for her infectious smile and vibrant personality. A GoFundMe campaign was created to assist her family with funeral expenses, describing her death as a senseless act.
The New Haven Police Department is investigating the shooting. As of the latest available reports, no arrests have been made in connection with Inthirath's death, and no suspects have been publicly identified. Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact the New Haven Police Department. In the wake of the shooting, friends and community members created a makeshift memorial on Sheffield Avenue, gathering to light candles in her memory. Her family continues to seek justice and answers in her unsolved case.
