On January 1, 2017, Xavier Wimes, a 22-year-old Buffalo resident, was shot and killed during a violent altercation at a New Year's Eve party held at the Towne Gardens Apartments, a known gang activity hub on the city's East Side. Wimes was a member of the CBL/BFL gang, a group notorious for drug trafficking and violence.
