On April 21, 2011, 26-year-old Amir Chambers, an African-American male, was found deceased in a residence on Mills Street in Buffalo, New York. An investigation by the Buffalo Police Department and the Erie County Medical Examiner's Office determined that Chambers had died from a gunshot wound. The case, which initially appeared to be an unsolved murder, was later revealed to be a meticulously planned execution rooted in gang rivalry.
The investigation uncovered a plot orchestrated by
members of the LRGP gang. Prosecutors detailed how Alexis Mills, a 23-year-old woman with a prior intimate relationship with Chambers, lured him to the Mills Street home. This was a setup. When Chambers opened the door for Mills, a co-defendant, Fred Keys, fatally shot him in the head. To ensure he was dead, Mills then kicked Chambers in the head. The motive for this violent act was retaliation for the killing of Alonzo Scott, the brother of LRGP leader Dewayne Gray, a month earlier. Chambers was believed to be associated with the rival Cold Springs Gang. Before the shooting, there had been a failed attempt to poison Chambers.
The case was brought to a close through a federal racketeering investigation that dismantled the LRGP gang. In March 2016, Alexis Mills pleaded guilty to a RICO conspiracy charge for her role in luring Chambers to his death. Fred Keys, the gunman, was also convicted of RICO conspiracy and conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute crack cocaine. In January 2017, Keys was sentenced to 360 months in prison, while Mills received a sentence of 222 months. Another LRGP associate, Philip Brown, who was present during the planning of the murder, pleaded guilty to RICO conspiracy and was sentenced to 240 months in prison in March 2017. In total, 19 members and associates of the LRGP gang were convicted as a result of the extensive investigation.
