In the summer of 2018, a promising young life was abruptly cut short in Buffalo, New York. Dennis Thompson, a 24-year-old male, was inside a home on Wright Avenue on June 21st when his life was tragically taken from him. The cause of his untimely death was a fatal gunshot wound, an act of violence that would soon bring a suspect into the focus of law enforcement.
The investigation into Thompson's death moved swiftly, and the day after the shooting, an arrest was made.
The suspect was identified as Dominic Vereen, who was also 24 years old at the time. In July of that year, Vereen was formally charged in connection with the killing. Initially, he faced a charge of second-degree murder, a serious accusation that carried the potential for a lengthy prison sentence. The legal proceedings continued to unfold over the following months as the evidence was presented and the judicial process took its course.
In November 2018, the case took a significant turn when Dominic Vereen pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter. By admitting his role in the fatal shooting, Vereen avoided a trial on the murder charge. The following month, in December, he was sentenced for his crime. A State Supreme Court Justice handed down a determinate sentence of 20 years in prison. In addition to his time behind bars, Vereen was also sentenced to five years of post-release supervision, ensuring that he would remain under the watch of the justice system even after his release from prison.
