In the evening hours of a Wednesday in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the life of 22-year-old Amari Hodges was tragically cut short. On November 12, 2025, police responded to the intersection of Kalamazoo Avenue and Hall Street on the city's southeast side, where a car had struck and knocked over a light pole. Inside the vehicle, first responders discovered Hodges, who had sustained a gunshot wound. Despite their life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Kent County Medical Examiner's Office later ruled his death a homicide.
The incident was the second shooting in that neighborhood within two days, leaving residents frustrated and concerned about the escalating violence. The Grand Rapids Police Chief acknowledged the community's fears and expressed his own devastation over the loss of another young life. The investigation into the shooting led detectives to identify a suspect in the weeks that followed.
In early December, authorities announced the arrest of 18-year-old Darrius Jones in connection with Amari Hodges' death. Jones was subsequently charged with open murder and a felony firearm offense. The police chief expressed hope that the arrest would bring a measure of comfort and healing to Hodges' family, commending the detectives for their swift work in closing the case and providing answers to his loved ones. Jones was jailed and awaited his arraignment.
