In the late hours of May 9, 2025, a social gathering in Tallmadge Township, near Grand Rapids, Michigan, turned tragic for 19-year-old White / Caucasian male Connor Steven Lotterman. An engineering student at Grand Valley State University and a graduate of Covenant Christian High School, Connor was attending a house party on Second Avenue where a group of acquaintances had congregated. The atmosphere shifted drastically around 11:11 p.m.
when a firearm was introduced into the environment by another attendee located on the second floor of the residence.
While Connor remained on the ground floor with other guests, 20-year-old Westen Meulenberg, a resident of Jenison, Michigan, was in an upstairs bedroom where he located a rifle. According to investigators, Meulenberg began discharging the weapon through the floorboards of the room. The shooting was described by law enforcement as intentional in its action, though the deadly result was deemed accidental. Multiple rounds penetrated the ceiling of the room below, and one of the bullets struck Connor in the head. Emergency services responded to the critical scene, and Connor was transported to a local hospital. despite medical intervention, he succumbed to his catastrophic injuries the following day, May 10, 2025.
Law enforcement officials from the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office investigated the scene and determined that alcohol was a contributing factor in the events leading up to the shooting. Meulenberg was identified as the individual responsible for firing the shots. He admitted to detectives that he was the only person to discharge the weapon through the floor and acknowledged knowing that he had accidentally hit someone. The forensic autopsy confirmed the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the head, ruling the manner of death as accidental.
Westen Meulenberg was subsequently arrested and charged with discharging a firearm in a building causing death. In September 2025, he pleaded guilty to the charge. During the legal proceedings, it was established that while there was no intent to kill, the reckless act of firing a rifle into an occupied room below warranted severe legal consequences. On October 27, 2025, Meulenberg appeared in court for sentencing. A judge ordered him to serve a prison term of five years and ten months to 25 years, with credit for time already served.
