In the evening of November 6, 2025, the life of 26-year-old Donovan Elenoran Moody was tragically cut short in Grand Rapids, Michigan. A passerby discovered Moody's body lying in the roadway on Hollister Avenue SE near Wealthy Street around 8:30 p.m. and immediately contacted the police. First responders arrived at the scene, but Moody was pronounced dead from multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the head.
The investigation by the Grand Rapids Police Department's Major Case Team quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence, with evidence suggesting the suspect was in or near a vehicle when the shots were fired. Donovan Moody, born on February 22, 1999, was remembered as a man who cherished his family and found joy in making others laugh. A loving father to three daughters, he was also a passionate rapper with dreams of making it big in the music industry. The investigation into Moody's death led to a swift arrest. On November 17, 2025, the Grand Rapids Police Department announced that 44-year-old Gary Lee Griggs had been arraigned and formally charged with open murder and felony firearm in connection with the shooting. Further investigation into Griggs's background revealed a significant criminal history. In 2008, he had been sentenced to prison for second-degree murder in a 2005 homicide. He had also been sentenced a year prior for home invasion and felony firearms charges, serving a total of 18 years before being released in 2023. The family of the victim in the 2005 killing expressed their frustration with the justice system following the news of Griggs's most recent charges.
