In the evening hours of October 7, 2025, a community gathering at A.B. Palmer Park in Shreveport, Louisiana, took a tragic turn, ending in the death of 17-year-old Martaevion Loston. The event, ironically a National Night Out aimed at fostering community safety, became the backdrop for a violent encounter that claimed the young man's life.
Shreveport Police officers were called to the park, located in the 500 block of East 79th Street at Line Avenue, around 7:30 p.m.
following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Loston suffering from gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to a local hospital for medical attention but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
Investigators from the Violent Crimes Unit began an intensive investigation into the shooting. Through their efforts, which were significantly aided by footage from the Real Time Crime Center, they were able to piece together the sequence of events. The investigation revealed that Martaevion Loston was the first to discharge a firearm at the park. In response, a 15-year-old juvenile returned fire, striking and fatally wounding Loston.
Following the investigation, the 15-year-old was taken into custody and charged with possession of a firearm by a juvenile and possession of a firearm inside a city park. Authorities have indicated that they are working with the Caddo Parish District Attorney's Office to determine if homicide charges will be pursued against the juvenile. The case has highlighted the issue of youth gun violence in the community, prompting calls from law enforcement for parents and guardians to be more proactive in educating children about the severe consequences of possessing and using firearms.
