In the spring of 2019, a young man's life was cut tragically short in Shreveport, Louisiana. James Dale Gonyer, a 21-year-old White/Caucasian male, was fatally shot on May 26, 2019. The events of that evening unfolded at a residence on Blanchard Latex Road, where Gonyer and his girlfriend were visiting 19-year-old Brandon McLaughlin.
An argument between Gonyer and his girlfriend in a bedroom prompted McLaughlin to intervene by firing a shot into an air mattress.
This act escalated the situation, leading to a confrontation between Gonyer and McLaughlin. During the altercation, McLaughlin shot Gonyer six times with a. 40-caliber handgun, inflicting fatal wounds.
Following the shooting, Brandon McLaughlin was arrested and initially charged with manslaughter. However, the legal proceedings would ultimately lead to a more severe charge. On September 23, 2021, a Caddo Parish jury convicted McLaughlin of second-degree murder. The trial, which commenced on September 20, 2021, concluded with a sentence of life in prison at hard labor, without the possibility of probation, parole, or suspension of sentence for McLaughlin. The prosecution was handled by Assistant District Attorneys Kodie K. Smith and Brittany Arvie, while Mark Rogers represented the defense. The case was presided over by District Judge Chris Victory.
