In the fall of 2025, the life of 45-year-old Anthony Wayne 'Tony' Cupec was tragically cut short on the evening of October 8th in Lynchburg, Virginia. A beloved husband and stepfather, Cupec was known for his kindhearted nature and his ability to make those around him feel cherished. His sudden and violent death left his family and the Lynchburg community in a state of shock and mourning.
On that fateful Wednesday evening, at approximately 8:59 p.m., Lynchburg Police responded to reports of shots fired near the intersection of Pierce Street and 12th Street. Upon their arrival, they discovered Anthony Cupec suffering from gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to Lynchburg General Hospital, but tragically, he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that Cupec had been involved in an altercation with another man in the street. The argument escalated, leading to the other individual producing a handgun and firing at Cupec. Security footage from the area reportedly showed the two men interacting shortly before the fatal encounter. The suspect then fled the scene in a dark-colored sedan.
Early the following morning, the Lynchburg Police Department located and apprehended a suspect, 43-year-old Larry Kersey, in connection with the shooting. Kersey surrendered to authorities without incident and was subsequently charged with murder, the use or display of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The vehicle believed to have been used to flee the scene was also recovered by the police. Court records indicated that Kersey was unemployed at the time of the incident and a hearing was scheduled for the following February.
