On the evening of April 9, 2018, in Lynchburg, Virginia, a 33-year-old Black male named Jamale Deshawn Pannell was found lying on the ground on Madison Street with multiple gunshot wounds. Lynchburg Police had responded to a call about shots fired in the area just after 6 p.m. Despite the arrival of medics, Pannell succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The investigation into his death led police to a suspect that same night.
