Mhynesha Day, a 22-year-old Black woman from Springfield, Illinois, was found shot to death inside a home in the 3000 block of Hoover Avenue on October 9, 2025. Deputies were dispatched shortly after 2:30 p.m. and discovered three victims who were pronounced dead at the scene: Day; Devione Brady, 21; and 9-year-old Cash Russell. Preliminary autopsies conducted by the Sangamon County Coroner determined all three died from gunshot wounds.
The triple homicide shook a tight-knit neighborhood on the edge of the city, where relatives later described Day as a young mother whose life was cut short in a place that should have been safe.
Investigators quickly secured the residence and obtained additional search warrants at a nearby apartment complex while Illinois State Police crime scene specialists assisted in processing evidence. A red SUV seen in the area around the time of the shooting was identified; when officers later located a matching vehicle near Governor Street and MacArthur Boulevard, it was occupied by two women who were questioned and released at the scene. The SUV was towed for further examination as detectives continued canvassing and interviews. Authorities also noted that one of the adult victims might not have been affiliated with the home, a detail they are working to clarify as they reconstruct the hours leading up to the attack.
As of the latest public updates, no arrests have been announced and no suspects have been publicly named. Crime Stoppers issued an appeal for tips to assist the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office, emphasizing the urgency of resolving a case that took the lives of two young adults and a child. Officials have stressed that the investigation remains active and that additional information will be released as evidence is analyzed and leads are developed.
