In the early minutes of June 15, 2025, Kemarius Mack, 23, a Black/African American male, was caught in the chaos of a parking lot fight outside an apartment complex in the 2800 block of Franklin Drive in Mesquite, Texas. Police say multiple people were fighting when shots were exchanged between a suspect and Kemarius Mack. A witness and arriving officers tried to save him—applying CPR and a chest seal—before he was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died; public memorial records

The Mesquite Police Department reported that the suspected shooter immediately contacted authorities after the gunfire and claimed self-defense. Detectives conducted multiple interviews, including with that suspect, and collected several pieces of evidence for analysis. Despite the claim, officials said the investigation would continue and, at minimum, be presented to a Dallas County grand jury to determine whether charges are warranted.
Family members described Kemarius Mack as trying to break up the fight when he was shot, and they publicly pressed for answers as detectives withheld the suspect’s name during the open case. Police emphasized that lifesaving efforts were made at the scene and reiterated that further details would be released as evidence was processed. As of the initial announcements and local reporting in June 2025, no arrests had been made and no charges publicly filed.
