In the light of a summer afternoon, a day of mourning tragically devolved into further sorrow. On June 27, 2025, Savon L. Majette, a 27-year-old Black male from Chesapeake, Virginia, was fatally shot in Norfolk. The brazen act of violence unfolded around 1:00 p.m. in the parking area behind the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, located off the 100 block of Fife Street.
Mourners were just leaving a memorial service at the nearby Metropolitan Funeral Home when the sound of gunfire shattered the somber atmosphere.
Responding to the scene, Norfolk police officers discovered Majette suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the location. The violence of the moment was further underscored by the fact that at least one stray bullet pierced a wall of the cathedral, where a summer day camp was in session, terrifying families and staff within what is typically a place of peace.
Shortly after the shooting, a second man arrived at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with a gunshot wound. Detectives quickly determined that his injuries, which were not life-threatening, were connected to the same incident on Fife Street. City officials described the shooting as a targeted attack, not a random act of violence, suggesting a premeditated element to the tragic events of that day.
