In the late hours of a Tuesday in Memphis, the life of 27-year-old Cody Devontae Johnson was brought to a violent and sudden end. On June 3, 2025, at approximately 10:41 p.m., police were called to the 6800 block of Birch Lake Drive in southeast Memphis following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Johnson lying outside the front door of his apartment, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate response, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The investigation into the homicide uncovered surveillance footage from the night of the incident. This video evidence revealed two individuals, their identities concealed by ski masks and dark hoodies with matching pants, approaching Johnson. The footage captured the moment the suspects opened fire, fatally striking him. After the shooting, the two assailants were seen fleeing the scene on foot, disappearing behind the apartment complex.
In the days that followed, the Memphis Police Department actively sought the public's help in identifying the individuals responsible for Johnson's death. They released portions of the surveillance footage showing the two suspects running from the area of the Newcastle Apartments on Birch Lake Drive. The authorities have urged anyone with information regarding the shooting or the identities of the suspects to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers. As of now, the investigation remains ongoing, and no arrests have been announced in the case. The motive for the shooting has not been publicly released.
