In the late afternoon of Friday, August 22, 2025, the life of 18-year-old Antonio Sykes, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in a Cordova, Tennessee, parking lot. Around 5:40 p.m., deputies from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the vicinity of Berryhill Road and Chimneyrock Boulevard, where they discovered Sykes inside a vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene, turning a neighborhood strip center into the backdrop of a homicide investigation.
The Violent Crimes Unit of the sheriff's office quickly began to piece together the events that led to the shooting. Their investigation swiftly pointed towards 18-year-old Trenton Dillon Harris as a primary suspect. Within days, a warrant for first-degree murder was issued for his arrest. Believing Harris had fled the state, investigators enlisted the help of the U.S. Marshals Service. The fugitive task force tracked Harris to a residence in Atlanta, Georgia. On Thursday, August 28, 2025, he was taken into custody without incident and awaited extradition back to Shelby County to face the charges against him.
Upon his return to Tennessee, Trenton Dillon Harris was indicted on charges of first-degree murder and employing a firearm with the intent to commit a felony. A judge set his bond at $1 million. The investigation did not conclude with Harris's arrest. On October 14, 2025, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of a second suspect, 18-year-old Antwain Carrick. He was charged with first-degree murder and the unlawful use of a firearm in connection with the death of Antonio Sykes.
