In the quiet hours of a September morning, tragedy struck the life of 17-year-old Zion Renaldo Myssiah Jordan, a Black/African American male from Spartanburg, South Carolina. On Saturday, September 20, 2025, while sitting inside his home on Amherst Drive, a barrage of gunfire erupted from the front yard. The bullets pierced a front window, striking the teenager at least twice as they tore through the living room. Officers who were called to the scene around 12:50 a.m.
found him unresponsive; he was pronounced dead inside the residence.
Investigators quickly characterized the shooting as a targeted attack, a belief strengthened by the fact that no other homes in the vicinity were struck by the gunfire. The Spartanburg County Coroner's office publicly identified Zion Jordan as the victim, confirming the date and location of his death. As detectives began their work, they interviewed witnesses, gathered evidence from the yard and the home, and canvassed the neighborhood for any surveillance footage that might shed light on the perpetrators. The community, already grappling with a recent increase in gun violence, mourned the loss of another young life.
The investigation led to the arrests of three individuals. Kenton Beard, 27, Ariana Jackson, 17, and Henry Jackson Jr., 18, were all charged with murder. Henry Jackson Jr. faced an additional charge for possession of a weapon. Authorities announced that both teenage suspects would be tried as adults. During a court appearance, it was revealed that the motive for the shooting is believed to be connected to a past relationship Ariana Jackson had with Zion Jordan. The solicitor told the judge that investigators believe this prior relationship is why Zion was killed and that Ms. Jackson allegedly provided information on his whereabouts and directions to his house with the understanding that the intent was to kill him. At the bond hearing, Zion's mother spoke of the deep and permanent void his death has left in the lives of those who loved him, describing him as a beloved son, brother, and friend with his entire life ahead of him. All three suspects were denied bond.
