A 34-year-old woman's life was tragically cut short on the evening of September 28, 2025, in a horrifying act of violence that unfolded in front of her three young children. Porsha Ivey was fatally shot while sitting in a car at a Pilot gas station on Highway 15 in Lee County, South Carolina, near Bishopville. The devastating event occurred around 7:30 p.m., shattering the lives of her family and leaving a community in shock.
According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, Ivey and her
boyfriend, 34-year-old Derrick Scott Sr., were traveling through the area when an argument broke out between them as they drove on Interstate 20. The couple, who were not residents of Lee County, pulled off the highway and into the parking lot of the gas station. It was there that Scott allegedly shot Ivey multiple times. The couple's three children, aged four, five, and nine, were present in the vehicle and witnessed their mother's death. Authorities arriving at the scene found a chaotic and heartbreaking situation, with the children reportedly crying out, 'You shot Mommy.'
Derrick Scott Sr. was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and unlawfully placing a child at risk of or causing harm. During his initial court appearance, a judge denied bond due to the severity of the charges, ensuring he remains in custody. Family members revealed that the couple had been in a relationship and that Ivey had recently left Scott to stay with a relative in Columbia just days before the shooting. They had reportedly reconciled and were on their way back to Horry County when the fatal argument ensued.
The three children were not physically injured in the incident. The South Carolina Department of Social Services was called in to investigate and determine the next steps for their care.
