On a tragic night in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, a vibrant life was cut short over a seemingly minor incident. Ayana Velardo, a 30-year-old female, was at the Mila Lounge for an after-hours party on August 9, 2025. Inside the crowded establishment, an accidental bump between Ayana and another patron, Natasha Mary Dixon, 35, sparked a heated exchange of words. Although others intervened to separate the two women, the animosity lingered.
The confrontation spilled out from the lounge onto Hazle Street. After leaving the club, Ayana was in a parking lot across the street when she was approached by Dixon. Witnesses reported that as Dixon drew near, Ayana asked, 'what's up?'. In response, Dixon produced a handgun and fired a single shot, striking Ayana in the throat. According to one witness, Dixon smiled after firing the weapon before fleeing the scene in a blue minivan. A bystander and police officers who arrived shortly after attempted to perform life-saving measures, but Ayana's injuries were too severe. She was transported to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The investigation into Ayana's death moved swiftly. Wilkes-Barre City police detectives utilized surveillance footage and witness statements to identify Natasha Dixon as the shooter. A witness was able to provide investigators with Dixon's address, and her appearance matched the description of the assailant. Further investigation revealed that a blue van registered to her husband's adopted mother had its license plate recorded by readers not far from the scene of the crime. Dixon was arrested and charged with an open count of criminal homicide.
Natasha Dixon was arraigned and subsequently jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility without bail. On February 20, 2026, she waived her right to a preliminary hearing, and the criminal homicide charge was sent to the Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas for trial.
