On the evening of August 15, 2025, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of a neighborhood in West York, Pennsylvania, leaving a young man's life tragically cut short. Osha C. Copeland, a 23-year-old Black male, was fatally wounded in the shooting that took place around 8:15 p.m. on the first block of South Highland Avenue. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Copeland and another individual, Jacob Anderson, suffering from gunshot injuries.
Both were rushed to WellSpan York Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Copeland was pronounced dead at 8:50 p.m. The York County Coroner later confirmed that his death was a homicide resulting from multiple gunshot wounds to his hand, wrist, and chest. Anderson, the second victim, sustained serious injuries to his legs but was reported to be in stable condition following surgery.
The West York Borough Police Department, with lead investigator Lt. David Kahley, launched a swift and thorough investigation into the deadly shooting. Their efforts, which included the review of surveillance footage from various locations, analysis of witness statements, and examination of cell phone records, soon pointed to two individuals. On August 20, 2025, the York County District Attorney's Office announced that charges had been filed against 24-year-old Donald Dent Jr. and 43-year-old James Johnson, both residents of York. The two men were charged with homicide, attempted homicide, and aggravated assault in connection with the incident. Johnson faced an additional charge for illegal possession of a firearm. Authorities confirmed that both suspects had been apprehended and were in custody.
Osha Clarence Copeland, affectionately known to friends and family as 'Pop,' was born in the Bronx, New York, on April 19, 2002. He later moved to Newport News, Virginia, where he spent much of his youth. Remembered as the life of the party, he was known for his love of dancing and his ability to make others laugh. He was a father of two daughters and the only son among eight siblings. His family described him as having a joyful heart and a passion for music, which he expressed through writing songs and creating his own music videos. His sudden and violent death left his family and community to mourn the loss of a young life full of promise.
