In the heart of Center City, Philadelphia, a sequence of events unfolded on a Friday evening that ended in the tragic death of 33-year-old Lauren Jardine. On what was reportedly an early evening in September, Jardine was on the 1200 block of Chestnut Street when she observed a man, later identified as 45-year-old John Kelly, in a heated argument with his girlfriend outside a 7-Eleven.
Kelly was allegedly brandishing a screwdriver during the dispute.
Believing she was intervening to help someone in distress, Jardine, who was from West Philadelphia, approached the couple. An argument then broke out between Jardine and Kelly. During the confrontation, Jardine, who was illegally carrying a firearm, drew her weapon. A struggle for the gun ensued between them. Bystander and surveillance footage captured parts of the chaotic scene, showing the two wrestling and Jardine being struck in the head.
The struggle culminated in Kelly gaining control of Jardine’s gun. He then shot her multiple times. After she collapsed, Kelly reportedly fired another shot while telling her to 'put it down,' possibly believing she still held his screwdriver. Jardine was struck in the lower back and hand and was rushed to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. In the aftermath, Kelly was seen discarding the firearm into a nearby mailbox.
Police arrested John Kelly, who was identified as homeless and known to frequent the area, near the scene of the shooting. He was initially charged with murder, illegal gun possession, and other related offenses. However, the case took a significant turn when the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office announced that the murder charge against Kelly was being downgraded to voluntary manslaughter. This decision was based on new evidence, reportedly including video footage that showed Jardine attempting to stab Kelly with the screwdriver before he shot her. The District Attorney's office stated that they were in communication with Jardine's family to offer support throughout the investigation and legal process. Kelly also faced charges for multiple weapons violations and possession of an instrument of crime.
