In the fall of 2021, a promising life was tragically cut short in what police have described as a murder-suicide. Lindsay Alexis Johnson, a 22-year-old Black woman, was a senior honors student at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with a bright future ahead of her. She was pursuing a degree in Biopsychology with a Pre-Med specialization and was set to graduate in December of that year.
Known affectionately as 'Lady Bug,' she was admired by peers and faculty for her intellectual curiosity, sense of humor, and mentorship. Johnson was an active member of her campus community, participating in the Black Student Union and working at the university library.
The events of November 7, 2021, brought a devastating end to her journey. On that Sunday, Johnson was found deceased in the 4000 block of Monument Road. Investigators determined that she had been shot in the head by her boyfriend while inside a blue Lexus. Following the fatal shooting of Johnson, her boyfriend then turned the gun on himself, ending his own life.
The Philadelphia Police Department investigated the case, and the findings concluded that Johnson was a victim of a murder-suicide. As the perpetrator died at the scene, there were no arrests made in connection with her death. The loss of Lindsay Alexis Johnson was a shock to her family, friends, and the Thomas Jefferson University community, who remembered her as a cherished and vibrant individual with a passion for helping others. In a posthumous recognition of her academic achievements, Lindsay was awarded her Bachelor of Science Degree in Biopsychology.
