In an act of compassion that ultimately cost him his life, Rakesh Bhagavan, a 50-year-old hotel manager in Robinson Township, Pennsylvania, was fatally shot on October 3, 2025. An Indian-origin male, Mr. Bhagavan was a beloved business owner and a father to three daughters. The tragic events unfolded when he stepped out of the Pittsburgh Motel office to check on a disturbance in the parking lot.
The commotion was a domestic dispute involving Stanley Eugene West, 37, and a woman.
West had reportedly shot at the woman's car as she tried to drive away with her child in the back seat. Hearing the unfolding chaos, Mr. Bhagavan approached West and simply asked, “Are you alright, bud?” In response to this inquiry, West raised his firearm and shot Mr. Bhagavan in the head at point-blank range. The entire exchange was captured on surveillance video. Mr. Bhagavan was pronounced dead at the scene.
After shooting Mr. Bhagavan, West fled the scene in a U-Haul van. His escape was short-lived as police tracked the vehicle using license plate readers to the East Hills of Pittsburgh. A shootout ensued between West and the police, during which a Pittsburgh detective was shot in the leg. Officers returned fire, striking West multiple times. Both the detective and West were taken to the hospital for their injuries. The female victim from the initial altercation was also hospitalized in critical condition.
Stanley Eugene West was arrested and is facing a litany of charges, including criminal homicide, attempted homicide, and recklessly endangering another person. Following the incident, he was additionally charged with two counts of attempted criminal homicide, assault of a law enforcement officer, and aggravated assault related to the shootout with police. Legal proceedings against West have commenced, with a preliminary hearing scheduled to determine if the case will go to trial.
