The investigation into Mitchell's death led to the arrest of Jeffdyn Rushton, a
33-year-old man from the Marshall-Shadeland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Rushton was charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and several other related charges. According to the criminal complaint, the incident began at Art's Tavern on Penn Avenue, where Mitchell and the other man got into a fight with Rushton and several other individuals. Surveillance footage showed Rushton following the victims' car and shooting at them on the bridge.
Rushton was found to be in possession of a firearm despite having a prior conviction that prohibited him from owning one. He was arrested about a month after the shooting and later convicted of third-degree murder in the death of Joseph Mitchell. During the trial, Rushton maintained his innocence but expressed sympathy for Mitchell's family. He was sentenced to 40 to 80 years in prison.
Mitchell's family described him as a kind and caring individual who was deeply loved by his siblings and friends. His youngest sister, Brittany Jernigan, remembered him as a great big brother who always helped keep everyone in line. Mitchell had been working for Stanley Steemer at the time of his death.
