On a summer day in Pittsburgh, what began as a string of alarming events in the Knoxville neighborhood would end in the death of 20-year-old Tyrone Harris Jr. On June 22, 2015, reports began to surface of a man firing a gun at people. The situation quickly escalated as Harris carjacked a vehicle, sparking a police chase that spilled onto the busy Route 51.
The pursuit was chaotic.
Harris, armed with an AR-15 rifle, fired at the pursuing officers, endangering civilians caught in the midday traffic. The chase came to a dramatic and violent end when Harris became stuck in traffic. He exited the stolen vehicle and began shooting at the officers, who returned fire. In the ensuing shootout, Harris was struck multiple times by police gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office later confirmed that Harris died from multiple gunshot wounds to the head, mid-section, and extremities, ruling his death a homicide.
In the aftermath of the incident, it was revealed that Harris, an African-American man from Pittsburgh's South Side, had a history of encounters with law enforcement and was awaiting trial for several other cases at the time of his death. The officers involved in the shooting, from the Pittsburgh Police, Allegheny County Sheriff's Office, and the Port Authority, were placed on administrative leave, a standard protocol in such cases. The district attorney's office was tasked with reviewing the circumstances of the shooting to determine whether the use of deadly force was justified. No charges were filed against the officers, who were later honored for their bravery in confronting a heavily armed individual and preventing further harm to the public.
