In the late morning of Sunday, July 20, 2025, the Portsmouth neighborhood of North Portland was shattered by the sound of gunfire. At approximately 11:04 a.m., officers from the North Precinct were dispatched to the 9300 block of North Newman Avenue following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered a young man suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate life-saving efforts of a sergeant at the scene, the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The victim was later identified as 21-year-old Jalen Hudson, a Black/African American male from Portland. The Oregon State Medical Examiner’s office conducted an autopsy and determined that Hudson’s cause of death was gunshot wounds and ruled the manner of death as a homicide. In the wake of his death, Hudson's family requested privacy as they mourned their loss.
Portland Police Bureau Homicide detectives promptly began a thorough investigation into the shooting. As of late July 2025, no arrests have been made and authorities have not released any information about a potential suspect or suspects. In an effort to gather crucial evidence, detectives have made a public plea to residents and businesses in the New Columbia area of the Portsmouth neighborhood. They are specifically requesting security camera and doorbell camera footage from the morning of the incident, between 10:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Investigators believe this footage may hold the key to identifying a suspect and understanding the events that transpired before and after the fatal shooting. The investigation remains open and ongoing as authorities continue to seek answers for Jalen Hudson's family and the community.
