On the evening of October 19, 2000, 25-year-old African-American male Laraye Lewis was sitting with a friend on a bench outside the Caritas Plaza, located at 2830 N. Williams Avenue in Portland, Oregon. At approximately 7:20 p.m., the conversation was shattered by the sound of gunfire. An unidentified man had begun firing multiple shots in their direction.
Both Lewis and his friend quickly ducked for cover, but it was too late for Lewis. He was struck by the gunfire and died at the scene.
