In the late afternoon of August 1, 2025, the quiet of a Hillsboro, Oregon, hotel was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Inside the Extended Stay on Northeast Cornell Road, a confrontation turned deadly, leaving one man dead. The victim was identified as Yuri Gonzalez-Gonzalez, a 44-year-old Hispanic male from Florida. When police arrived at the scene around 4:00 p.m., they discovered Gonzalez-Gonzalez deceased.
Witnesses at the hotel described hearing a loud, deafening bang followed by a
rapid succession of about five more shots. One woman, a guest at the hotel with her family, recounted the terrifying moments, stating the gunfire erupted right outside her room. She quickly gathered her son and their dog, taking refuge in the bathroom as she called 911.
The investigation into the shooting led to a swift arrest. Hillsboro Police took 33-year-old Amir Haidar, a Beaverton resident, into custody. Haidar is now facing a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the death of Gonzalez-Gonzalez.
According to a witness, both Gonzalez-Gonzalez and Haidar had been seen at the hotel for about three weeks leading up to the fatal incident. She mentioned having casual conversations with both men and expressed her shock, stating she never anticipated such a violent outcome. While the relationship between the victim and the suspect is still under investigation, authorities have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat.
