In a tragic turn of events during Tulsa's Juneteenth festival, 22-year-old Isaiah Knight, a Black male, was fatally shot on the night of June 21, 2025. The celebration in the historic Greenwood district descended into chaos around 11 p.m. when gunfire erupted near an overpass, sending attendees scrambling for safety. In the midst of the panic, Knight was struck by a bullet and killed, while seven other people sustained injuries.
Loved ones reported that Knight, a young father who had recently completed welding school and was due to start a new job, was attempting to break up a fight when he was shot.
The investigation into the shooting led to the identification and arrest of three individuals. On June 24, Tulsa police apprehended 19-year-old Timetrious Moore. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Moore firing a weapon, and during questioning, he admitted to firing his gun into the crowd. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder in connection with Knight's death.
Further investigation led to the arrest of a second suspect, Darmontre Peters, on July 2. Peters faced seven counts of assault and battery with a deadly weapon for his alleged role in injuring the other seven victims during the shooting. A third individual, 20-year-old Tyri Rodgers, was arrested in mid-July and charged with accessory to a felony. Investigators stated that Rodgers was seen taking the gun from Peters immediately following the shooting. The incident prompted community leaders to call for changes to ensure the safety of future public gatherings.
