Avon Harris, 69, a Black male, was shot on the evening of Sunday, August 17, 2025, in north Toledo. Officers responding to a person-shot call found him on Elm Street near Lagrange and Spring streets with a gunshot wound to the abdomen around 8:45 p.m. He was treated at the scene and transported to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center. He died from his injuries the next day, Monday, August 18, 2025.
Detectives recovered at least one shell casing at the scene as they began building the case. By Wednesday, August 20, police had identified and arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting. Court records and police statements indicated the victim’s fatal injury and timeline, from the Sunday night shooting to his death at the hospital the following day.
The suspect, Marlon Henderson, 45, was arrested on August 20 and initially charged with murder and felonious assault in Harris’s death. A judge set bond at $1 million, and Henderson’s first court date followed soon after. Authorities described the case as originating from the Elm Street shooting and confirmed the single-victim nature of the incident.
On August 28, a Lucas County grand jury returned an indictment charging Henderson with two counts of murder with firearm specifications, one count of felonious assault with a firearm specification, and one count of tampering with evidence. The indictment reiterated the core facts of the case: the August 17 shooting on Elm Street, Harris’s transport to the hospital, and his death the next day. As of that filing, no additional suspects had been publicly named.
