Hakeim “Poizon” Hutchinson, 31, a Black / African American male, was killed in a shooting outside a home on Rockaway Parkway in Brooklyn, New York, on the morning of July 3, 2025. The block sits near the border of Canarsie and East Flatbush, and the violence unfolded at a time when the neighborhood was just waking up—an ordinary summer morning turned suddenly frantic.
Police said the shooting happened just after 7:30 a.m., along Rockaway Parkway between Avenue B and Ditmas Avenue.
Neighbors later described hearing screaming and rushing outside to find Hutchinson gravely wounded. In the chaos, one passerby who called 911 recalled seeing a woman screaming from a balcony and hearing pleas for help echoing through the street, the kind of sound that makes people freeze for a beat before they realize it’s real.
Officers from the NYPD’s 67th Precinct responded to the scene and found Hutchinson suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Emergency responders transported him to Brookdale University Hospital, but he did not survive. Authorities and local reporting described the shooting as occurring outside his residence, adding to the sense that he was attacked at the very edge of what should have been a safe place.
Investigators believed the shooting followed an argument in the street. The suspect was described as a male, and later reporting relayed that he fled southbound on Ditmas Avenue; witnesses and sources close to the investigation described him running off in a white shirt and black sweatpants. News 12 also reported that an NYPD drone later spotted someone matching the flight path near train tracks by Avenue D, raising the possibility that the person tried to disappear into the transit system after shedding clothing while running. At the scene, investigators noted an absence of shell casings, fueling speculation that a revolver may have been used, though the weapon type was not officially confirmed in the early reporting.
In the days immediately following the killing, authorities described the case as active and unresolved, with the shooter not yet identified and no arrests announced. Detectives canvassed the area and sought surveillance footage in hopes of piecing together the moments before the confrontation and tracking the suspect’s escape route.
