A summer block party in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn turned into a scene of tragedy when Roberto Cuevas, a 45-year-old man, was fatally shot. The gathering, filled with families and children enjoying food, music, and dominoes, was winding down on the evening of August 9, 2025, when the sound of gunfire shattered the festive atmosphere.
Witnesses described hearing approximately four gunshots, which caused panic and sent attendees running for cover.
When the chaos subsided, Roberto Cuevas, a resident of Sunset Park, was found on the ground with a gunshot wound to his back. Emergency medical personnel rushed him to NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn in critical condition, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Law enforcement sources indicated that Cuevas, who was of Dominican origin, had been involved in an argument with another man at the party before the dispute escalated to deadly violence.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to a suspect. Tony Caba, a 39-year-old man from Florida, was arrested in connection with the killing. Police believe the attack may have been premeditated, as Caba had traveled from Florida. He has since been charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. The investigation is ongoing.
