In Greenwood, Mississippi, a bright and outgoing 19-year-old Black woman named Lakeria Fisher tragically lost her life on the night of Sunday, June 1, 2025. Fisher was driving along Lindsey Avenue when she was shot in the chest. The gunshot wound caused her to lose control of her vehicle, which then crashed into a pole. The coroner was called to the scene at approximately 10:53 p.m. and she was pronounced dead.

In the days following the shooting, the Leflore County Sheriff's Department swiftly identified a suspect. A little over two weeks after the fatal shooting, authorities announced the arrest of 22-year-old Jeremiah Wilson Jr., also of Greenwood. Officials confirmed that Wilson was Fisher's boyfriend. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was taken into custody on June 4. Wilson has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with Fisher's death, with the charging documents alleging that he was the one who shot her on that Sunday night.
The community and Fisher's family were left reeling from the sudden and violent loss. Friends and family remembered her as a vibrant presence who had the ability to light up any room she entered. Her sister organized an online fundraiser to help with burial expenses, remembering Fisher's energetic spirit. Funeral services were later held at the Providence Missionary Baptist Church. Her death was also noted on community memorial pages as another life lost to gun violence in Greenwood in 2025.
