In the late hours of August 24, 2019, 49-year-old Theodoric Elton Hunter Sr., known to friends and family as Theo, was at his home in the 400 block of Hollywood Avenue in Hampton, Virginia. His wife saw him at 10:30 p.m. before she went to bed. A few hours later, she awoke to find that both he and his black 2019 Nissan Altima were gone. His house key had been left behind on the kitchen counter. According to his wife, his departure followed a brief, tense conversation about a meeting he had with another woman earlier that day. Initially, his wife was not alarmed by his absence, as she said he had a habit of leaving their home without notice. However, concern grew when he failed to show up for his job at a shipping container terminal for the Port of Virginia, a job his family said he loved and where he had recently encouraged his son to apply. On August 27, after missing work, Theodoric was officially reported as a missing person. The investigation into Theodoric's disappearance uncovered few leads, and the pieces of information that emerged seemed to deepen the mystery. A couple of days after he was last seen, calls to both of his cell phones began going directly to voicemail, and the devices could no longer be tracked. Activity on his bank accounts and social media profiles also ceased completely. The most significant clue was a license plate reader that captured his Nissan's tag, UYY-5688, at 3:00 a.m. on August 25, heading south on the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel. There was another possible, though unconfirmed, sighting of his vehicle on August 26, traveling eastbound through the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. Despite these potential leads, neither Theodoric nor his vehicle have been seen since. The circumstances surrounding Theodoric's life add a complex layer to his case. His wife, whom he had been married to for less than a year, described him as a secretive man who had "a lot going on" that she was not aware of, calling him "a walking secret." This portrayal, however, stands in stark contrast to the man his other family members knew. His two adult sons, ex-wife, and brother insist that it was completely out of character for him to be out of touch, especially with his children, with whom he spoke several times a week. They describe him as a devoted father and grandfather who loved his family and his job. Just ten days before he vanished, he had taken both of his sons to a dealership to co-sign for new cars, promising to help with the payments. The case remains an unsolved and painful puzzle for his loved ones, caught between the conflicting accounts of his life and the distressing silence that began that August night. All efforts to locate him have been unsuccessful, leaving his family to grapple with the uncertainty and the hope for closure.
