Jerry Gwynn Duncan, a 79-year-old white male from Leasburg, NC, passed away on May 10, 2022. He was born in Caswell County and was the son of the late Richard Thomas Duncan, Sr. and Irene Thelma Lunsford Duncan. Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Gertie Frances Kendrick Duncan. He is survived by his three children: Sheri Gwynn Duncan Van Horn, Jerry Gwynn Duncan II, and Kaylin Troy Duncan, as well as his two brothers, Carl Dean Duncan and Richard Duncan, Jr., and his sister, Sue Duncan
Clayton. Jerry was a retired contractor who enjoyed spending time outdoors, particularly fishing and hunting.
The circumstances surrounding Jerry Gwynn Duncan's death were tragic. On May 9, 2022, Jerry Duncan shot and killed his wife, Gertie Duncan, before turning the gun on himself in what has been described as a murder-suicide. The incident occurred at their home in Person County. Jerry Duncan called 911 and threatened to kill himself before deputies arrived at the scene. They found him on the back porch with gunshot wounds, and he was still breathing when taken to the hospital. Jerry Duncan died around 2 a.m. on May 10, 2022.
The couple's granddaughter, Morgan Mattos, stated that she did not see the murder-suicide as a crime of hate but rather as an act of love. She explained that her grandmother had suffered from dementia for nine years, and her grandfather had been deathly ill for three years with no diagnosis. Morgan and her mother, Sheri Duncan, had been the caregivers for Jerry and Gertie Duncan. According to Morgan, Jerry Duncan always wanted to pass away with his wife, and the act was done out of love, not hate. The Person County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the incident.
