On the evening of Friday, August 29, 2025, 17-year-old male Damonte Hightower was involved in a fatal incident in the Spanish Lake area of St. Louis County, Missouri. Authorities were first alerted to the violence around 10:40 p.m. by a ShotSpotter activation, a system designed to detect gunfire, which pinpointed the disturbance to the 11000 block of Larimore Road. Simultaneously, St.
Louis County Police received notification from a local hospital that a gunshot victim had arrived for emergency treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel and witnesses who had rushed him to the facility, Hightower succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
Investigators piecing together the events of that night relied on surveillance footage and witness accounts to understand what transpired outside a business on Larimore Road. The video evidence depicted a confrontation between Hightower and another individual that escalated rapidly. The footage showed the two engaged in a verbal argument before the situation turned violent, with the other man drawing a weapon and firing at Hightower. Following the shooting, the assailant fled the scene while bystanders intervened to transport the wounded teen to medical care.
Police identified the suspect as 23-year-old Nykelte Wilburn. By Sunday, September 1, 2025, prosecutors had formally charged Wilburn in connection with Hightower's death. The charges levied against him included second-degree murder, armed criminal action, shooting at or from a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a weapon, and failing to report a shooting. The investigation revealed that Wilburn allegedly fired the fatal shots following the brief dispute captured on camera. Following his arrest, a judge set his bond at $1 million, cash-only, as he awaited further court proceedings.
