In early 1989, 38-year-old traveling salesman Roy Jacob Hagel resided in Bismarck, North Dakota. His last confirmed sighting was on February 26, 1989, at a bowling tournament in Fargo, North Dakota. After the tournament, for reasons unknown, Hagel embarked on a cross-country journey in his blue Ford Tempo instead of returning home.
