In the quiet town of Bishopville, Maryland, the life of 57-year-old David Keith Shaulis, a skilled handyman and carpenter, came to an unexpected and violent end on the evening of Monday, May 12, 2025. A man known for his easy smile and willingness to help others, Shaulis was found deceased in his residence on Shell Mill Road.
Authorities were alerted to the situation when a woman, later identified as Shaulis's 61-year-old girlfriend, Bonnie Hackendorn, placed a 911 call shortly before
9:30 p.m. to report that her boyfriend had been shot. When Maryland State Police troopers arrived at the home, they were met by Hackendorn. Inside, they discovered David Shaulis unresponsive on the floor, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
As the investigation unfolded, detectives from the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit began to piece together the events of that evening. Based on the evidence collected and information gathered during their preliminary investigation, authorities took Bonnie Hackendorn into custody. She was subsequently charged with first and second-degree murder, first and second-degree assault, and other firearm-related offenses.
Following her arrest, Hackendorn was transported to the Worcester County Detention Center, where she is being held without bond. The body of David Shaulis was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to officially determine the cause and manner of his death. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
David Shaulis, born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, was the youngest of five children. He was a father to four children and a grandfather to five. Remembered as a man who took immense pride in his construction work, he was also an avid lover of the ocean, motorcycles, and classic muscle cars. His death has left his family and a wide circle of friends to mourn their sudden and tragic loss.
