In what began as a seemingly harmonious family gathering, a dispute tragically escalated, ending the life of 24-year-old Hispanic male, Andy Tapia Negrete. On the morning of June 22, 2025, in Bloomington, Minnesota, Negrete was with relatives in the driveway of his uncle's home on the 200 block of W. 92nd Street. The group was drinking and appeared to be getting along until an argument broke out.
The verbal disagreement quickly turned violent.
A home surveillance camera captured the grim sequence of events as a man who had arrived with Negrete's cousin, 18-year-old Exon Alfonzo Sanchez Garzon, began punching Negrete while he was seated in a chair. Sanchez Garzon then entered the fray, punching several people before stepping back. He pulled a handgun from a cross-body bag he was wearing and fired three shots at his cousin. After a brief pause, Sanchez Garzon fired another five rounds at Negrete, who was struck multiple times.
Following the shooting, which occurred around 6:45 a.m., Sanchez Garzon fled the scene on foot. Police arrived to find Negrete wounded in the driveway; he was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. Another individual with a gunshot wound later took themselves to a Minneapolis hospital. The conflict was described by the police chief as a family matter, as all involved were related.
Later that night, Exon Alfonzo Sanchez Garzon was arrested during a traffic stop in Mounds View. His 18-year-old girlfriend, who was with him, told police that when she picked him up in Minneapolis, he was crying and confessed that he had killed his cousin. Sanchez Garzon was subsequently charged with second-degree intentional murder. Two other men, ages 22 and 43, were also arrested in connection with the shooting, one on suspicion of second-degree assault and the other for allegedly aiding an offender.
