On September 9, 2018, Samuel Abron-Yeager, a 23-year-old resident of Fridley, Minnesota, was fatally shot during a confrontation at the Emerson Food Market in north Minneapolis. The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. when Abron-Yeager was involved in an altercation with two other men, Jamarius Shief, 18, and Demerio Davis, 19, both from Minneapolis. According to reports, Shief and Davis entered the store and engaged in a discussion with Abron-Yeager and another individual.
The situation quickly escalated when Shief began punching one of the men, prompting Davis to open fire on Abron-Yeager.
Abron-Yeager, who was armed, returned fire as he chased Shief and Davis out of the store. During the exchange of gunfire, Abron-Yeager sustained multiple gunshot wounds and collapsed. He was transported to North Memorial Health Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries less than two hours later. Shief was also killed in the shootout, dying at the scene from gunshot wounds believed to have been inflicted by Abron-Yeager.
Demerio Davis was apprehended shortly after the incident, just two blocks away from the store. He was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Samuel Abron-Yeager, as well as being a felon in possession of a firearm. Davis, who uses several aliases, was expected to make his first court appearance shortly after his arrest. Prosecutors indicated their intention to seek an enhanced sentence due to the presence of numerous bystanders, including children, at the time of the shooting.
